Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg wants to take you to Mars — or at least as close as most of us will ever actually get to the red planet.

“This is a neat 360 video from the surface of Mars. You can look around like you’re actually on the planet,” Zuck posted to his Facebook page, explaining how NASA produced the image by “stitching together photos taken by NASA’s Curiosity Mars Rover, using technology created by the 360 video team at Facebook.”

“This is just the beginning of what we can do with virtual reality and 360 video,” he concluded.

For Zuckerberg, virtual reality and 360 videos now represent a major part of Facebook’s long-term business plan. And given the early buzz the company has managed to generate around VR content and technology, that business plan just might lead to big bucks for the world’s foremost social network.
